FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 27, 2019

SAN JOSE HOPE VILLAGE FORCED TO CLOSE

The City of San Jose will not renew the lease at 1039 Ruff Drive and is forcing SJ Hope Village to close. This is an unconscionable response to a reasonable effort to address the ongoing inhumane treatment of homeless persons in San Jose and Santa Clara County. During the 6 months, the County and City had to identify another location no serious effort was made by staff to look for a new site.

Join us to protest the failure of City and County government to support the Hope Village model. Additional information on residents and the future plans of SJ Hope Village organizing team will be announced.

According to the 2017 point in time census, there were 4,350 homeless individuals in San Jose, 3,219 of whom were unsheltered. The City and County have no plan to address this crisis.

Hope Village showed the greater San Jose community that an organized, structured encampment can be an important element in addressing the serious human rights problem of homelessness in the greater San Jose community. We will continue to fight for those who most need our help and support.

Help Close and Store Hope Village Equipment

Saturday 3/30 and Sunday 3/31

9:00 AM- 1 pm (or until we are done)

We need help in breaking down and storing the tents, platforms and other equipment at Hope Village. Join us to help residents move to temporary motel accommodations, tents are stored and say thank you to the community for their support.

San Jose Hope Village will suspend operation on March 31st due to the inability of either the City of San Jose or the County of Santa Clara to make available land for a new location. Future plans are unclear but we will continue to search for a  way to re-open Hope Village and move forward with our plan to provide a safe secure, humane location for area homeless.

Thank you for your support,
